Blog Banner Copy vs Content Writing

If you ever needed a writer for your business, or if you want to be or are a writer yourself, then you have probably heard of these terms before. Copywriting and content writing. But what do they mean? Are they the same or are they different? Which one is more expensive if you need to hire, and what will earn you more money if you are writing yourself? These are questions I hear a lot. In my first blog post, I will go over these questions and I will use different sources to find out the answers.

Let’s start with what copywriting and content writing actually are.

Copywriting, as explained by Wikipedia: Copywriting is the act or occupation of writing for the purpose of advertising or other forms of marketing.

Copywriting, as explained in a blogpost from Flair Journal: Copywriting is one of the most crucial elements of marketing and advertising. Is the process of writing persuasive marketing and promotional materials.

Copywriting is like a call-to-action, but on a bigger scale: it means to motivate people to take some form of action, such as make a purchase, click on a link, donate to a cause, or schedule a consultation.

We can say that copywriting is the art and science of writing copy – words on web pages, ads, brochure, etc. that sells your product or service and influences prospective customers to take action.

The blog post above is a review from the Filthy Rich Writer program, with as its main coach Nicki Krawczyk. She is a successful copywriter who has years of experience under her belt. I follow her on her social platforms and I am also thinking about taking her program. She is legit, the real deal, and that is why I take her advice and view on things very seriously.

After reading the above, I think our conclusion can be simple and clear. I’d say copywriting is writing that focuses on influencing the reader to take some kind of action.

That sounds good for copy! But what is content writing?

As explained by Wikipedia: In publishing, art, and communication, content is the information and experiences that are directed toward an end-user or audience. Content is “something that is to be expressed through some medium, as speech, writing or any of various arts”. Content can be delivered via many different media including the internet, cinema, television, radio, smartphones, audio CDs, books, e-books, magazines, and live events, such as speeches, conferences, and stage performances.

This blog post from the Filthy Rich Writer website (mentioned above) is very insightful. https://filthyrichwriter.com/copywriting-qa-how-to-reign-supreme-with-content/

The blog post mentions the following: ‘Content provides added value for the reader by giving them things to read/view that are useful, entertaining or inspirational.’ Check out the full blog post!

Reading about content writing makes me come to the following conclusion. I’d say that content writing is writing with the purpose of entertaining, inspiring, and educating.

The differences between copy and content.

After reading Wikipedia and various blog posts, (there are many, many more than those I mentioned above), we can say that there is a clear difference between copywriting and content writing. Copywriting sells and or persuades, content writing does not, it entertains and or educates.

There is more than that one difference. You might think that copywriters and content writers are much the same, but they vary quite a bit. Copywriting requires a lot of skill. Copywriters need to know how to sell, and that takes some level of education and a lot of expertise. Don’t get me wrong, content writers also need skills and knowledge but, overall, content writing is just less focused on selling and more on entertaining and educating.

A content writer is not immediately a copywriter and to get into writing copy as a content writer is a big step. If you want to be a copywriter, you really have to learn how to write to persuade people. Nobody can learn that in one day, it takes time.

A copywriter, however, can write content. And usually, copywriters have an advance on content writers because of their knowledge of marketing and consumer behavior. A lot of copywriters also write content and that’s great! I do this as well. But it is still important to know the difference as writers.

Do copywriters and content writers earn the same amount?

No, they do not. Because of their training and level of expertise, copywriters normally earn more than content writers. Copy is more directly linked to a company’s revenue because, as we stated before, copywriting is writing that sells and/or persuades. Content is not linked to a company’s revenue as much. Therefore, it usually earns less than copy.

Another factor that plays into this is the fact that there a lot of content writers out there. This is likely because content writing is pretty easy to get into. But that also means that there is a lot of competition. And when there is a lot of competition in a field of work, that often means people get paid less.

Some more thoughts.

I think we have answered the most common questions. But I have more to say. And since this is my personal blog, I can say it! Don’t worry, I’ll keep it short.

I’d like to mention that I love content writing. Writing blog posts is so much fun to me! But I want to be a copywriter first because I know it will help me in every aspect of writing. It makes me more skilled and I also learn a lot about marketing. That is valuable to me.  I am always reading and learning about copywriting.
